Get Your Mind Rite: Clinton Portis

- Football, Get Your Mind Rite, Washington Redskins -

Clinton you are the MAN! In my opinion our offense struggled last season because the team was without our future Hall of Fame running back. While Ladell Betts was racking up 100 yard games last year, I know you heard rumblings of the Redskins should trade you. I squashed those despicable rumors, CP is our guy. Fans fail to realize that Betts’ production should be credited to great play by the offensive line. How else do you explain Dockery getting that huge contract from Buffalo? Or Samuels making the Pro Bowl? It’s a guarantee that you were headed toward your fourth 1,500 yard rushing season in your five year NFL career before you got hurt… if it wasn’t for that damn preseason… that has-been of a quarterback Mark Brunell throwing an ill advised interception… it was your no good desire to win and lust for competition that forced you to chase down the cornerback and lay a mammoth of a hit on him after the interception… CP ARE YOU WITH ME!

With that being said…

Clinton Earl Portis get on the field! Our offense has struggled the entire preseason. The run game is non existent, our offense line is banged up, and Jason Campbell is attempting to get some continuity with the starters. Clinton how many snaps have you ever played with our starting quarterback? None.

How about telling Dollar Bill and SouthEast Jerome to step up and be a leader on this football team. This is Jason Campbell’s first time coming into a season as the starting quarterback and he could use some veteran leadership. You are great in pass protection, but where were you against Pittsburgh when Jason needed you? Your response to Campbell’s unfortunate injury was, “that’s why I don’t play in the preseason. That’s not leadership.

We all know you’re faking and/or milking this tendonitis thing. You and Dolemite Jenkins might be good actors in front of a podium, but you’re not fooling anyone. LT has not played in any preseason games, but he practices. Tomlinson is building a rhythm with his offensive line and young quarterback. Are you above that? Are you better than LT?

Incase you haven’t noticed Ladell Betts is breathing down the back of your neck. He is dying to take your starting position. Coach Janky Spanky isn’t calling the plays, Al Saunders is. Betts is the throwback, workhorse of a tailback that Joe Gibbs, Joe Bugel, and the Redskins Nation love. Do you want him to take your starting spot? Because I am telling you now, come Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, if you don’t run for at a minimum 80+ yards and a touchdown the fans will start calling for Ladell. You may be more talented, but he works a whole lot harder than you do and in this league that goes a long way. Get your mind rite!

They’ll Call Keith Olbermann A Vick Apologist Now

- Football, Michael Vick -

Glad to see Keith Olbermann on Sunday Night Football alongside Bob Costas, Chris Collinsworth and Jerome Bettis. He is smart, witty and knows how to toss up a quip with the best of ‘em. He’s one of the O.G.’s of Sportscenter anchors and, if he is really like the character modeled after him in the classic mini-series Sports Night, he’s quite a fun person to be around.

Here’s the complete text of Olbermann SNF speech on Vick (for those without sound). When I watched his commentary on the Mike Vick situation last night, I focused on one particular part of his overall commentary:

“No NFL miscreant has been so vilified while an active player… Not Pacman Jones, not Lawrence Phillips, not Ray Lewis, not Leonard Little.

And even in a football world where just a week ago a scout could still complement Corey Ivy of the Ravens by calling him a quote “pit bull with a gold cap,” no crime has been so viscerally felt and reviled, and non gone so unforgiven.”

So true, so true. I have wondered why Vick’s situation has seemed much, much worse than the situations involving Lewis, accused of murder, and Little, who killed a woman while driving drunk after his 24th birthday party and five years later was arrested for drunk driving again and told by a judge to stop drinking.

Both are still in the league but neither are treated with the same anger and overal viterol as Vick. Strange, but… what about public reaction isn’t strange these days?

Speaking of which, Michael Vick read a statement to the public after his time in court today and exited without answering questions. In the statement, Vick mentioned that he “found Jesus.” Hopefully he is turning his life around and if religion is what it takes, so be it.

Morning Munchies: Vick’s Day O’ Pleadin’, Stern’s Fine and Old Man Boomer

- Baseball, Basketball, Football, Morning Munchies -

  • This morning, Michael Vick is in court this pleading guilty to charges, which may leave open the possibility he… escapes jail time? Something about becoming a government informant and turning on other, bigger “fish” down the road.
  • Ryan Zimmerman sits down to do a Q & A with ESPN’s Jonah Keri. I’m glad one of my favorite Nats moments was his (walk-off homer against the Yankees on Father’s Day).
  • Stern fined Sonics owner Aubrey McClendon $250,000. At this rate, I wouldn’t put it past Stern to be involved in the illegal wiretapping the government weaved into the Patriot Act. No one thinks bad thoughts about Stern’s NBA and escapes the wrath of his Thought Police!
  • Boomer is old, large but not completely ineffective… for now.

    Remembering Eddie Griffin

    - Basketball -

When I was in high school I had the pleasure of attending Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. I also had the pleasure of guarding the best player at camp that session, Eddie Griffin. He was lanky, strong, versatile, and yes… he dunked on me. One of my favorite stories is telling people how Eddie Griffin dunked on my head when I was sixteen.

Despite all the troubles surrounding Eddie Griffin I have been a huge fan. I remember watching him dominate everyone at the basketball camp and hearing stories about how he punched some kid out at the camp the year before. I remember hearing about how the number one high school player in the country had been expelled from high school for fighting. Despite being blessed with the same gifts God bestowed on Kevin Garnett, Eddie Griffin was constantly surrounded by turmoil. Although I never knew him personally, it seemed as Griffin was always struggling and fighting with something or someone.

After being dominated at basketball camp by the late Eddie Griffin I became an immediate fan. After all, I went to play division III basketball, while he went to Seton Hall. Incase you do not recall, Griffin’s freshman year at Seton Hall was one of the best I’ve ever seen. They had A SQUAD! Coach Tommy Amaker boasted the top recruitment class in the country. He brought in Toney-El, Andre Barrett, and Eddie Griffin as freshman phenoms to join with sophomore stud Samuel Dalembert and Ty Shine. They were the Fab Five of 2000. I remember sitting in my dorm room watching Eddie Griffin dominate. The guy averaged 18pts, 11rebs, and 4blks a game in the Big East as a freshman! Remember when he had the triple double game with 10 blocks? That team was destined for greatness. At least until Tommy Amaker sold them out for Michigan.

I never forgave Tommy Amaker for leaving Seton Hall for Michigan. I was not a Seton Hall fan, but I was an Eddie Griffin fan. Amaker left those boys high and dry. Not one of them ever reached their full potential. There is no way Amaker was able to get the top recruitment class in the country without promising the players he would stay for the majority of their college careers. He lied to those kids and I wished him failure at Michigan ever since.

Griffin had an up and down NBA career. He started out strong as a Houston Rocket his first two years, but fell off the face of the earth until resurrecting in Minnesota. I told my friends that he would fit in perfect with the Timberwolves and Kevin Garnett would be the strong influence needed for Eddie to finally reach his potential. I would check the box scores of the Wolves games to see how Griffin did (it didn’t hurt that KG is my favorite player). Griffin was a nice fit to the team bringing great shot blocking and rebounding to a team that reached the Western Conference finals. But again just as Eddie was looking as if he had rebounded from his problems he slipped into obscurity.

Sadly Eddie Griffin never reached his full potential as an NBA player or a person. He was constantly in and out of trouble, suffered from alcoholism, but never came off as a bad person. Without any skepticism about his personal life I would just like to say that I truly enjoyed Eddie Griffin and always felt linked to him after only sharing forty minutes on a basketball court with him almost ten years ago. If he had that kind of impression on me, I can only imagine the effect he had on the people close to him. I always wished him success and enjoyed watching on the court. It is hard to come to grasps that someone so young can be taken so early without fully reaching their vast potential. Eddie Griffin RIP.
