Snatching the perfect pair of pumps or high boots that aren't too snug in the calf just got a bit easier for women who wear sizes 9 to 14, thanks to Peculia Shoes, which specializes in fits for larger feet.
In June, owner Gail Roach opened the store at 3800 Brighton Road, Brighton Heights, with her daughter Amber, who, like her mother, wears a size 12.
"There's just such a need for it," Ms. Roach said.
The shop stocks shoes by Aerosoles and Barefoot Tess and hopes to add Jessica Simpson and Nine West to the inventory. And if shoppers with smaller shoe sizes see something they like, it can be special ordered in just a few days.
"I'm trying not to leave anyone out," Ms. Roach said. The store also carries a mix of purses, bracelets, scarves and other accessories.
Peculia Shoes is the first venture in retail for the retired Pittsburgh Board of Education paraprofessional, but Ms. Roach has dreamed of owning a store since she was a teenager, she said. She decided to pursue it when a longtime landlord friend helped her secure the site of a former laundromat for the business. It took just two weeks to convert the space into a shoe showroom, she said.
