The basics
As well as being incredibly light the Asics Gel-Kayano 16 features the largest cushioning system in its series to absorb every pound of the pavement. The Flex Groove design promises a constant line with each stride, making it more efficient whilst decreasing fatigue. The women's version features female specific technology to accommodate for changes in women's hormonal levels, which causes changes in the foot arch. Added Plus3 tech reduces the load and tension to reduce the risk of injury.
The goodThe Asics Gel in the rear and forefoot really cushions the feet, reducing the force on each foot as they move forward. The result is a pair of trainers less likely to induce injury. Biomorphic Fit tech and isometric lacing also helps to offer a better fit to reduce the risk of blisters or irritation, often caused by long running sessions.
It excels at weight distribution too - an area other similar trainers have struggled. Running sessions feel just as light on the treadmill as they do on pavement. A Guidance Line running down underneath the sole also helps runners maintain a better running line and gait. This can only further prevent training-induced foot ailments.

The Running Man: the London Marathon's costume stampede
Let's face it, it takes extraordinary strength, determination and no little stupidity to run a marathon in shorts and a vest, but to do so in an outfit more suited to a Halloween party is a Herculean feat of sporting heroism. I know this, because last week at Asics' flagship store on London's Oxford Street, I test-ran "The Rhino". A 6'8" tall 25lb rhinoceros outfit constructed from plastic and foam, and with a range of movement that's more limited than a North Korean tourist visa, "The Rhino" will be charity runner Vincent O'Neill's outfit for 42 gruelling kilometres during the Virgin London Marathon this weekend, as he raises money for Save The Rhino ( savetherhino.org ).
After a short introduction to Asics' mind-bogglingly advanced running lab from the marvellous Lydia Meddings - who can measure, among other things, maximal oxygen uptake, respirator exchange ratio and heart rate - I hit the treadmill in my civvies (shorts and a T-shirt). Once I'd been running for 15 minutes or so and the treadmill crept up past 12 km/ph, the first beads of sweat ran down my face as I hit my competition pace. So far, so normal.
Asics gel Kayano 12 vs 13?
Ok, so I'm looking to get into shape, and decided to buy a good pair of running shoe. I'd come down to Asics Gel Kayano 12 and Asics Gel Kayano 13. Now, 13 is $99 compared to 12, which is $79. Which shoe should I get? Is it worth dishing out $20 more
There's probably no difference except for the color or trim. Each year Asics bumps up the number. The 12's cost $120+ when they first came out so go for them as long as they fit your feet and feel good. Otherwise, take a look at the Asics 21xx series.
