Area athletes proudly put on their pink

It’s not hard these days to see pink on football uniforms.

Two decades ago putting that “girlie” color on a macho football uniform was virtually unheard of, but not these days.

As the efforts of organizations to raise awareness for breast cancer have continued to gain steam across the country, not only are girls and women’s sports teams wearing pink to raise awareness during games but also sports such as football, basketball and baseball.

Teams across the Permian Basin have special nights to raise awareness and money for the disease, and on Friday night as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Midland High football team had a “Pink Out.”

There were plenty of pink shirts and hats in the stands at Grande Communications Stadium, but also there was pink on the Bulldogs’ football uniforms.

“Our guys are out there doing lots of things and the kids enjoy being a part of something special,” Midland High football coach Craig Yenzer said. “To be honest, Jenny Wood, who is the wife of one of our past booster club presidents, contacted me about six weeks ago and asked to do that for the Permian game. I said sure because we want to promote our kids being involved in the community.”
