When packing light, less is more
When shopping for gear with weight in mind, some products manage a balance between high quality and lightweight better than others. Many mainstream companies avoid the lightest weight materials simply because they do not hold up well enough. There are several ways to down-weight with each type of gear.
To stay dry : Gore-Tex Paclite is used by several companies. It's a light, waterproof material used in many shells.
To stay warm : When dry, high fill-power down has the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any material for jackets and sleeping bags.
To sleep well: For sleeping pads, foam, as opposed to self-inflating, pads are both light and cheap. Other strategies include sleeping on the frame of your backpack, or on a partial length sleeping pad.
To sleep under shelter: There is a wide range of lightweight shelter options, from a bivvy sac, which simply keeps a sleeping bag dry, to a poncho that turns into a tarp; to a traditional tarp, which can come in materials with different weights; to a lighter weight tent.
