Morning Munchies: College Coaches Pointing Fingers, Adrian Peterson, and Damn MJ…

NCAA

  • So let me get this straight. University of Wyoming’s coach Joe Glenn guaranteed a victory over Utah before their Saturday game. Up 43-0 Utah’s coach Kyle Wittingham calls for an onside kick in the fourth quarter to rub it in resulting in Glenn flipping Wittingham the bird from across the field. Who isn’t a loser in this story?
  • Did Charlie Weiss really just blame his players for their 1-9 record? The first nine loss season in Notre Dame history. If Ty Willingham had gone 1-9 would he have even been allowed to finish the season? Karma… Karma…
  • Indiana freshman guard Eric Gordon put up 33 on Chattanooga in his college debut. Not only did Gordon shoot 7 of 11 from down town, but he set the record for most scored in a Hoosier debut.

Morning Munchies: Hingis, Andy Reid, T-Mac, and High School Football

- Barry Bonds, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Morning Munchies, Tennis, Washington Redskins, Washington Wizards -

Barry Bonds plans on boycotting the Hall of Fame if his 756th home run ball is placed on display with an asterisk. I completely agree.

Torre finally inks a deal with the L.A. Dodgers. Now give him some talent.

Martina Hingis retires from tennis for a second time after testing positive for cocaine. Hingis states the test is false, but if your innocent why retire?

Andy Reid’s son is sentenced to prison. Before sentencing the judge called out the Reids as parents calling their home a “drug emporium and calling the them a “family in crisis.

Gibbs says Washington Redskins offense needs to get more physical.

Hoops for Thought: Bring em out, Bring em out!

- Basketball, Washington Wizards -

Agent Zero

Gilbert Arenas may have hit a clutch 3 point shot to send the game into overtime, but we aren’t going to win many games with Hibachi getting outplayed by the likes of Jamal Tinsley. Last night Arenas finished with 34points, 3assists, and 5 turnovers. Tinsley on the other hand had 20points 8assists and only 1 turnover. I know Agent Zero is the man, but we cannot win games when he only has 3 dimes. The blame does not entirely fall on Gil. No one had more than 3 assist last night. The offense was stagnant last night, too much one-on-one basketball. The Wizards will once again start slow this season. There are quite a few new faces on the bench this season and it will take time for everyone to find what their role is. I like that the team is deeper, it will just take time.

Juwan Howard

Howard is not a good fit for this Dallas team. Where do you see him playing? With Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard taking up most playing time at forward, when do you see him getting on the floor? Howard is best fit to shoot mid range jumpers opposite a dominant post player. The place for him to go was Miami. He would be a great fit as Haslem’s back up. After all, he was pretty eager to leave the Wizards for Pat Riley and the Heat back in 96’.

Darius Washington Jr.

I was happy to see Darius Washington Jr. Tuesday night. In case you don’t know who I am talking about, let me explain. Next time you watch the San Antonio Spurs play check out their back up point guard. He is number 35 and has a Freeway type beard. If you watch college basketball you should remember him. In 2005 with the time expired in the Conference USA Tournament Championship Game freshman Darius Washington sat at the free throw line with his Memphis Tigers down by two. Darius was fouled shooting a three at the buzzer and had to make two free throws to tie the game with Louisville and three to win. The only way the Memphis Tigers had a chance of qualifying for the NCAA tournament was to win this game and the conference title. Washington made the first free throw, then proceeded to miss the second two. I will never forget the sight of him laying on the court crying after the free throws. The former McDonald’s All-American entered the draft following his sophomore year, but was never drafted. I remember reading about how Darius Washington and his father were inseparable and about his battles with Sebastian Telfair constantly competing for the title of best point guard in the country as high school seniors. It is good to see that he finally accomplished his dream of making it to the NBA.

The Seattle Super Sonics

Last night I watched the Seattle Super Sonics play the Denver Nuggets. More importantly, I got my first glimpse of Durant as a pro. I have to say, he seemed timid throughout the game. I felt he settled for too many three pointers and when he did drive to the basket he kept throwing up floaters. P.J. Carlesimo should inform Durant that he is not 6’3 Tony Parker, but 6’9 Kevin Durant, take one more dribble and finish at the rim. A few other things I noticed about Seattle’s team. Seattle has three talented young point guards. Delonte West was suppose to be the third string point guard, but with Luke Ridnour’s broken nose West proved he deserved minutes. As the season progresses I can see the team dealing one of their point guards and I’m guess it will be the starter Earl Watson.

The Portland Trailblazers

The Portland Trailblazers looked good in their season opener. They will not be competing for a championship in the next year or two, but the nucleus is definitely there. Between Steve Blake and Jarrett Jack the team is set at point guard and with Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster the team is set on wing players. Outlaw has always been an athletic slasher, but after one game it appears he has worked on his midrange jump shot. Webster is also showing promise this year after being drafted with the 6th pick of the 2005 draft. Webster came into the NBA with a reputation of 6’7 sharp shooter so hopefully he will be able to live up to the hype.

Did anyone get a look at my pick for most improved player of the year LaMarcus Aldridge Tuesday night? The second year pro scored 27points on 12 of 19 shooting from the field (63%). Not to mention he was being guarded by one of the best defenders in the NBA, Tim Duncan. LaMarcus is going to reek havoc his sophomore season, just watch. I still can’t understand why the Bulls chose Tyrus Thomas over him in the draft when they needed an inside scorer.

Kobe Bryant

Kobe is not the reason the recent Laker/Bulls/Kings trade did not work. The real reason? Who in their right mind would trade Kobe Bryant for Ron Artest and Ben Wallace? That is the dumbest trade I have ever heard, I don’t even think the computer would do that in NBA Live. Think about it. A starting five of Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmar, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, and Ben Wallace. How many games do you really expect that team to win? Not to mention your taking on huge contracts of washed up veterans. Ron Artest is due about 15 million over the next two years and Ben Wallace is due in excess of 40 million over the next three years. With those contracts you couldn’t even sell the Staples Center on a rebuilding project. Personally I think the Chicago Bulls should stay pat. The Bulls are the best team in the East without Kobe and a main reason is their depth. But with Ainge going out and getting KG it only seems like a matter of time before Paxson follows suit and trades for Black Mamba.

Hoops for Thought: The NBA’s Worst Trades

- Basketball, Hoops For Thought, Washington Wizards -

First things first, I do not see Kobe Bryant being traded this season. What would the Los Angeles Lakers gain by trading Kobe Bryant? If Kobe Bean Bryant continues to adorn the purple and gold of the Lakers three things are guaranteed. 1) The Lakers will at least make the playoffs. Not contend for a title, but they will be a top eight team in the Western Conference. 2) The Los Angeles Lakers will stay relevant always showcased on ESPN Sportscenter, guaranteed. 3) Because of reasons 1 & 2, the Lakers can charge whatever they want for tickets, which is the number one reason the team will not trade Kobe Bryant. Movie stars do not want to spend thousands for courtside seats to watch Luol Deng or Josh Howard. Los Angeles needs a Super Duper Star… Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, that’s about it. I honestly don’t even think Gilbert or Dirk are big enough stars for L.A. I am not saying I would take any of these players for Kobe, because I wouldn’t, but I’m just saying. L.A. needs its show time, excitement, and playoffs. Jerry Buss understands this so Kobe is not going anywhere. Buss already botched the Shaquille O’Neal trade and was too scared to pull the trigger on the Kwame Brown & Andrew Bynum for Jason Kidd deal(which is the entire reason Kobe is pissed), but he cannot lose Black Mamba. Does Buss really want to go down in history as the guy who dealt away Shaq and Kobe? Which got me thinking… What are some of the worst trades in the last 15 years?

OK, a few rule disclaimers.

  1. This is my list, so if you don’t like it, leave a comment and we can discuss.
  2. I think Vince Carter is soft as cake, so the poo-poo platter Toronto got for him is fine by me.
  3. Orlando also received the poo-poo platter for Tracy McGrady, but T-Mac still hasn’t made it out of the first round of the playoffs so it’s a wash.
  4. I like Stephon Marbury a lot. It is not his fault that future Hall of Famers take over his teams after he leaves. Besides, Jason Kidd pleaded guilty to domestic violence, Phoenix had to trade him.
  5. Eddie Curry averaged 20pts, 7rebs, and shot 58% from the field last season for the New York Knicks. With that said, do you really think Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah will be able to match that production? (The two players the Bulls drafted with the Knicks draft picks traded for Curry) I don’t think so, but it’s too early to tell.
  6. Similarly if the Phoenix Suns get O.J. Mayo, Michael Beasley, Derrick Rose, Ty Lawson, or Donte Green with Atlanta’s unprotected 1st round pick this upcoming draft (for Joe Johnson) this will go down as the most lopsided trade ever, but again, to early to tell.

Alright with that out the way, here are the worst 5 trades over the past 15 years;

Honorable Mention

The Washington Wizards trade Kwame Brown and Laron Profit to the Los Angeles Lakers for Caron Butler and Chucky Atkins.

Kwame Brown was supposed to be the future of the Washington Wizards. During his pre-draft workouts with Michael Jordan he told his royal airness, “if you draft me, you’ll never regret it. It did not take long before Jordan regretted it. MJ verbally and physically abused Kwame, crushing all confidence he once possessed. It is rumored that during practice Jordan smacked Kwame in the face and told him to “stop being a bitch! After Jordan was fired by the Wizards Kwame still could not get the job done. During the 2005 playoffs a Gilbert Arenas video appeared on the scoreboard at the Verizon Center pleading with fans to no longer boo Brown. Kwame responded with skipped playoff practices and a game. He even threatened to punch Arenas in the face through the media. So he was shipped to Los Angeles were he averages a pathetic 7pts and 6rebs.

In return the Washington Wizards received the 2001 Big East Player of the Year. Drafted by the Miami Heat with the 10th pick of the 2002 draft Caron Butler was traded to the Lakers in the deal that sent Shaquille O’Neal to Miami, only to eventually land in Washington. Joining the Wizards “big three Caron Butler made his first All-Star team and averaged 18pts and 7rebs a game this past season. I bet Kobe wished he was a part of a big three (Kobe, Lamar, and Caron) instead of having Kwame Brown.

5. The Miami Heat trade Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, and a 1st round pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for Shaquille O’Neal.

The Miami version of Shaq is extremely lazy. Shaq took half of the season off last year and in case you didn’t know, Miami is in a lot of trouble this year. There is no doubt in my mind that Dwayne Wade will opt out of his contract in the fourth year player option. But they did win a championship so… I still don’t understand why Shaq can play second fiddle to Wade, but not Kobe.

Jerry Buss completely botched this trade. He traded away Caron Butler for Kwame Brown and Brian Grant was awful. Would you trade Shaquille O’Neal for Kwame Brown and Lamar Odom? I didn’t think so.

4. The Milwaukee Bucks trade the draft rights to the 9th pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, Dirk Nowitzki, to the Dallas Mavericks for the draft rights to the 6th pick of the 1998 NBA, Draft Robert “Tractor Traylor, and Pat Garrity.

At the time Milwaukee felt this was a good move for their franchise. Tractor Traylor was coming off an Honorable Mention All-American season. The Big Ten 1st Teamer even broke a backboard! After seven NBA seasons averaging 5pts and 4rebs a game following his estranged father Paul Silas wherever he coached, Traylor left the NBA for better things. For example: pleading guilty to a federal income tax charge stemming from interactions with his drug dealing cousin. Traylor is also standing charges of laundering four million dollars in drug money…

Meanwhile Dirk Nowitzki has career averages of 22pts and 9rebs. The six time All-Star was named the 2007 NBA MVP and won the 2006 three-point shoot-out trophy. The Bucks should have kept the David Hasselhoff junkie!

3. The Washington Wizards trade Chris Webber to the Sacramento Kings for Mitch Richmond.

Sorry, I just threw up…

The Bullets were a young team on the rise. After ending an eight year playoff drought the future looked bright. The problem… Webber loved the DC nightlife too much. So the Wizards traded the budding superstar for a fading Mitch Richmond before the start of the 1999-2000 season. (You have no idea how much pain this section is causing me) Mitch Richmond was fresh off a 23pt per game season averaging a 39% stroke from three, but the Kings never won over 40 games with him as their star. Never fully healthy in Washington, Richmond never won more than 30 games in his three years with the club.

Chris Webber went on to dominate the NBA for the next six years. He turned the Sacramento Kings into an instant contender battling the Lakers every year for Western Dominance. One of the best power forwards of his era, Webber averaged 23pts, 11rebs, and 5asts a game while in Sacramento.

2. The Charlotte Hornets trade the draft rights to the 13th pick in the 1996 NBA Draft Kobe Bryant to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac.

As the story goes…

The night before the 1996 draft the New Jersey Nets GM John Nash and new VP & head coach John Calipari ate dinner with Kobe Bryant’s parents. With the eighth pick of the draft the Nets were going to select the high school star. Bryant lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia allowing him to stay close to home and commute to Continental Airlines Arena in Jersey. Adidas’ Sonny Vaccaro had different plans for Kobe. Adidas just signed Kobe to a ten million dollar contract desiring him in a bigger market than New Jersey. The Hornets and the Lakers made a deal. Vaccaro and Bryant’s agent Arn Tellem told Nash that if the Nets selected Kobe he would refuse to play for them. Entering his first year as an NBA head coach Calipari did not want to take the risk. The rest is history, Kobe fell all the way to 13th were Jerry West already had his deal in place and dealt Vlade Divac for Kobe.

With that being said, Charlotte made a terrible mistake giving Kobe Bryant away to the Lakers. Sure Vlade Divac is one of only four (Kareem, Olajuwon, and Garnett) players in NBA history to achieve 13,000pts, 9,000rebs, and 3,000 assists. I don’t care if the 1996-1997 season was the best season in franchise history (54-28) for the Hornets. Vlade only averaged 11pts and 9rebs during his two seasons with the Hornets. I am sure the hive would have loved a Mugsy Bogues, Kobe Bryant backcourt to team with Glen Rice and Anthony Mason.

1. The Philadelphia 76ers trade Charles Barkley to the Pheonix Suns for Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry, and Andrew Lang.

Who are Tim Perry and Andrew Lang? Can you honestly tell me you remember them? This is the worst trade ever… So what did Barkley do his first season as a Sun?
Averaged 26pts, 12rebs, 5asts during the regular season, won league MVP, and took his team to the NBA Finals. Enough said.

Hoops for Thought: It’s time for the Wizards to trade Jamison

- Basketball, Washington Wizards -

Ernie Grunfield, it’s time. Time to trade Antawn Jamison. The 4th pick of the 1998 draft has been great the past three seasons, but we need to shake things up. Jamison averaged a solid 20 points and 8 rebounds a game this season, but I’m sorry, the team must move on. During the playoffs while Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler were hurt, Jamison did his best to keep the team afloat. The one-time all-star is a great scorer and without a doubt a great person, but I can’t see us winning a championship with our current roster, do you? Boston shook things up this year and it’s time for the Wizards to do the same.

The Washington Wizards are an offensive powerhouse. The team can score with anyone, ensuring every contest to be exciting and competitive. Last season the Wizards were fifth in offensive efficiency and second in points per game. The stands have stayed packed the past three seasons while the team lived and died by their offense, but the offense has yet to translate into playoff victories.

The Wizards are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. Able to light up the scoreboard, they give up almost as many as they score. Coach Eddie Jordan is desperate for effort and concentration on the defensive end. LeBron James tortured the team the past two post seasons. In 2005, Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal ran amok on our pitiful defense. Abe Pollin’s Wizards are in dire need of a defensive presence. Without a defensive game changer Washington will remain a middle-of-the-pack franchise. Yes, making the playoffs is great, but what have you done for me lately? Reaching the postseason is no longer good enough. Show Agent Zero we are serious about competing for a championship before he goes all Kobe Bryant on us.

Antawn Jamison is no longer what the Washington Wizards need. First things first, Jamison is a terrible defender. Not only a terrible defender, he has no desire to defend. Remember 2006 when he allowed LeBron’s game winning baseline drive in a momentum changing Game 3 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at the Verizon Center? Did you watch the game he let Zach Randolph score the game winner in Washington this season? He didn’t even put his hands up. I do not hate Jamison, but he has no heart when it comes to making a big stop. At least foul… I cannot get that LeBron lay-up out of my head, I’m sorry. Everyone who has ever played organized basketball was taught to cut off the baseline, at least try… On the game winner against Zach Randolph you can’t even contest the shot?

Honestly, even if Jamison wanted to be a good defender, he no longer has it physically. At 31 Antawn’s tenure status is a hindrance not a benefit. His feet are not fast enough to stay in front of quicker guards and he is not physical enough to stop stronger post players. He is a terrible help side defender and probably gives up just as many points as he scores, taking away from his actual offensive production.

There is no guarantee the Washington Wizards will return to the playoffs next season. Talk out of Washington is the team held first place in the East at the All-Star break before being ravaged by injuries, suggesting no need for change. If you haven’t noticed, the Eastern Conference has taken a step forward. Not only will Miami be healthy this year, the Charlotte Bobcats added some firepower with Jason Richardson, the Orlando Magic did the same with the addition of Rashard Lewis, and that is just in our division (Southeast). Let’s not forget about Chicago, Detriot, and Boston. Gil promises a victory in Boston for KG’s home debut, but can he promise a victory in a 7 game series with this roster?

Wizards need not become complacent. Having Antwan Jamison in the last year of his contract at roughly 15 million dollars, Grunfield has an opportunity to receive something special back for the cap relief Jamison will bring at the end of the season. Ernie do not be afraid to pull the trigger like the Bulls’ John Paxson did with P.J. Brown’s expiring contract last season. Mmm… who is in need of cap relief and has a disgruntled athletic defensive power forward that would thrive in the Wizards running system? Well, I am glad you asked…

Do you think the Phoenix Suns would trade Shawn Marion for Antwan Jamison?

Probably not, but hear me out…

Have you ever witnessed a team so desperate to get under the cap? Phoenix gave two first round picks to Seattle just to dump Kurt Thomas’ salary! That is the dumbest move the world has ever seen. No… it’s second to the Dirk Nowitzki for Robert “Tractor” Trailor trade, but you get my point. The Suns traded away Jerome James and this year’s first round pick, Rudy Fernandez, to the Portland Trailblazers for a mere three million in cash. The last two years they gave away draft picks as well. General Manager Steve Kerr is frantically attempting to save money for owner Robert Sarver, the Suns would at least listen to what the Wizards had to offer. Jamison’s 15 million dollar contracts coming off the books saves the Suns 30 million dollars (15 million in contract dollars, 15 million in luxury tax).

Shawn Marion’s trade demand came after not recieving the lucrative extension he desires. Next summer Marion will definitely opt out of his contract, so the Suns better move fast at taking advantage of their commodity. Maybe if the Wizards threw in a draft pick or two along with Jamison. What if the Wizards offered Jamison, Etan Thomas/Brendan Haywood, and their 1st round pick of the 2010 draft for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. The Suns would get the cap relieve they have been searching for with Jamison, a much needed big man, a 1st round pick in a draft that they are without a top pick (the Suns traded theirs away to Seattle), and they could get rid of Marcus Banks and his four year deal. Steve Kerr would probably turn us down, but Ernie Grunfield has to make some sort of effort.

Next option:

Bring Andrei Kirilenko to the Wizards. Kirilenko wants out of Utah bad. If you think that his peace with Jerry Sloan is going to last all season you’re crazy. I wrote this piece on why AK47 should be traded before his trade request, explaining why he is a terrible fit in Utah and how he would thrive in the East.

Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams is coming off a career season and will be entering the last year of his rookie contract. Surely Jazz owner Larry Miller would like to get some cap relief before signing Williams to the hefty deal necessary to keep him in Utah. After extending Williams’ deal, Jamison’s contract might leave enough room for the Jazz to go after a much needed shooting guard, say, Corey Maggette. The Clipper has already turned down an extension with his current team and let’s not forget he signed an offer sheet with the Jazz when he was a restricted free agent, but the Clippers matched it.

Larry Miller has a problem with airing his dirty laundry through the media. When the inevitable clash of Sloan and Kirilenko happens, do the Jazz really want this to play out in the media? The team already has enough problems convincing free agents to come to Utah. If Andrei continues to speak out about how difficult it is to play for Sloan that will only further hinder the chances of getting premier players in Utah.

Side note: Wouldn’t it be cool to have a guy named AK47 in a throwback Bullets jersey?

So Ernie, it’s time to roll the dice on Antwan. Portland gave away Zach Randolph for nothing, how about we not sit around and let another Western Conference All-Star slip through our fingers? It has been a long time since the Wizards had a chance to be elite. The only glory days I can recall is the Rod Strickland, Calbert Cheaney, Juwan Howard, Chris Webber, and George Muresan team that got swept by Jordan and the ‘98 Bulls. At 25, I have witnessed more bad trades and signings then I care to remember. From trading Webber to Sacramento for washed up Mitch Richmond, to the huge contract of Ike Austin(!), Kwame Brown, Sheed, Tom Gugliotta, and the whole “Jordan era.â€? The madness has got to stop. Don’t make us lose Gilbert too. I love Caron, but we need more. We need AK47, we need Shawn Marion, we needed Zach Randolph. Don’t waste the expiring deal like Jon Paxson of the Bulls did with P.J. Brown. Please, Ernie, trade Jamison’s contract for something special.

Morning Munchies: Patriots, MLB Playoffs, and NBA Trainning Camp

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is furious with the way his injury ravaged team played last night on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots. But honestly, is there anything the Patriots can’t do?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in trouble after losing Cadillac Williams and Luke Petitgout for the season with knee injuries. I’m happy Cadillac is not on my fantasy team.

Speaking the of the MLB playoffs;

NBA training camp has begun what’s going on the NBA?

I don’t know if I am overreacting, but I feel the falling of another college shooting victim should be more than a side bar story in the city of Memphis. This tragic event should be on the front page of the MemphisDailyNews.com. Here is what Memphis University posted on their website.
